The Truth is Out There

“Unthinking respect for authority is the greatest enemy of truth.”
— Albert Einstein
“Never assume the obvious is true.”
— William Safire

Americans have access to more media than any other people on earth. In spite of this, we are less informed and less aware of the issues than citizens of most other developed countries. Perhaps this is because we live in a country where propaganda masquerades as news, and critical thinking has become a rare commodity. While blame for this rests at least partly on our own shoulders, what has happened is not entirely the fault of the American People.

In the Mainstream Media, real news stories and conflicting opinions are mostly buried, and never see the light of day. When ‘unapproved stories’ gain too much traction, they are labeled ‘conspiracy theories’ and swept under a rug while the mainstream media attempt to laugh them down. Not infrequently, individuals who step forward to challenge the government and media are discredited, punished, and in some instances they suffer sudden depression and commit suicide in an out of the way place. Free thinkers are a threat to the status quo.

As the old tagline for The ‘X’ Files says, “the truth is out there”; the problem is you may have to read between the lines to find it. Remember, truth is usually somewhere between two extremes, and informed opinions come with an understanding of all sides of an issue. As you read, keep an open mind and exercise critical thinking. You don’t have to agree with something just because you read it — but if you are honest with yourself, you might find in your reading that that the truth of a matter is less cut and dried than you believed.
