In spite of George Washington’s warning to a young nation in his farewell address, we have become a nation obsessed with Partisan Politics; all too often leaning towards the extreme on either side of the fence without regard to common sense or the good of the country. Sadly, rather than seeking middle ground and working together, the left and the right have done much harm, sharply dividing our great nation. Rather than focusing on those issues most relevant to putting us back on the right track, they prefer to focus on issues that serve as distractions from the real problems and choices that we as a nation must face.
With regard to partisanship there is no right or wrong; those who hold viewpoints differing from our own, or who envision a different path for America, love their country no less fervently than we ourselves.
Freedom of thought and freedom of expression are foundational principles passed down to us by the courageous men and women who built our nation, and the Founding Fathers who shaped our Government. As Americans we are obligated to a measure of tolerance and must call upon our better instincts in the face of political opposition. Our political opponents are not our enemies; they are fellow Americans; and only by working together can we redeem ourselves to make America the Great Nation that it has the potential to be.
