The Mainstream Media

“The function of the press in society is to inform, but its role in society is to make money.”

— A. J. Liebling

Predatory capitalism, combined with billions of dollars spent by special interests to influence the government over the last 50 years, have resulted in a situation where the mainstream news media is controlled by a small handful of powerful corporations.

These, in concert with the government, effectively “manufacture” the news that is to be fed to the American People. The news itself is reduced to a quick series of sound bites, many taken entirely out of context, and buried beneath hours of loud commentary and opinion by supposed ‘experts’ whose only purpose is to tell the American People what they are supposed to think.

Here are the MSM; the mainstream news media that we know and love … some better, some worse (FOX). As you read about the ‘balloon-boy’, Jon and Kate, or the latest antics of ‘reality’ TV celebs, ask yourself how this sort of ‘news’ impacts your daily life. Try to decide how much of what is being displayed constitutes ‘news’, and how much is fluff, opinion, filler, advertisement, and brain-candy. If you remove all the items in these categories, you may find yourself looking at a disturbingly blank page … sorry, no news today.

“Sometimes people call me an idealist. Well, that is the way I know I am an American. America is the only idealistic nation in the world.”
